Change cushion covers for the holidays without adding inserts

Change the fabric people see while keeping the inserts that already fit the sofa and chairs.

Holiday-patterned cushions arranged on a white sofa.

Measure the insert, then read the listing

A cover labeled with the size of your current cushion is a starting point, not a guarantee of the same fit. Remove the old cover and measure the insert across its seams without stretching it. Read whether the new cover's dimensions refer to the finished cover or the recommended insert, and check whether an insert is included. This prevents an order intended to save storage space from arriving with several more pillows inside.

Think about the fill as well as the measurement. A firm foam insert behaves differently from a soft fiber-filled one, and forcing either into a much smaller cover can strain the zipper. Follow the maker's sizing guidance rather than assuming every cover should be undersized for a fuller look.

Make a small fabric change do the work

Choose one or two covers that relate to colors already in the room. A deep green stripe may feel seasonal beside warm wood without a holiday motif. If the sofa has patterned upholstery, a plain woven cover can give the eye somewhere to rest. You can leave several everyday covers in place; the whole sofa does not need to change at once.

Consider how the cushions are used. Beads, stiff embroidery and large decorative buttons may look appealing but feel uncomfortable behind a person's back. A heavily textured cover can also collect pet hair differently from a smooth one. Put the more decorative cushion where it can be moved easily, and keep a comfortable one available for the seat people actually use.

Check the care before the spill

Read the care label before buying and again before washing. A removable cover is not necessarily machine washable. Dark colors, trims and mixed fabrics may need particular treatment. If washing is permitted, close fastenings and follow the specified temperature and drying method. Let the cover dry completely before fitting it over the insert.

To change covers, work one corner at a time rather than pulling hard on the zipper opening. Make sure the insert reaches the corners and the closure is not catching loose fabric. If it takes considerable force to close, stop and reconsider the fit.

Store clean, dry off-season covers folded together in a labeled fabric bag or drawer. Tuck a small note inside with their sizes and the room they fit. A stack of covers takes far less space than a stack of complete cushions, and it makes the next change a matter of choosing fabric rather than managing another set of bulky objects.
