Balance wide-leg trousers with flat shoes
Flat shoes work with wide-leg trousers when the hem and fabric cooperate. Start at floor level, then adjust the top only if the whole outfit needs it.

Put on the flat shoes you intend to wear before judging the trouser length. A hem that looked right with a thicker sole can drag with a slim sandal. Walk several steps and look at the back as well as the front. The fabric should clear the ground comfortably rather than relying on careful posture to stay out from under your feet.
Let the fabric hang as intended
Soft, fluid trousers move differently from crisp cotton or denim. A heavy fold at the ankle can interrupt a fluid line, while a structured fabric may hold a wider shape above the shoe. If the trousers need shortening, have the length marked with the intended shoes on and consider whether they will also be worn with other sole heights.
Do not automatically size down to reduce volume. Check the waistband, rise and seat while sitting and walking. The leg can be deliberately wide while the rest of the garment still fits comfortably. A smaller size that pulls across the hips changes the intended shape without necessarily solving the hem issue.
Try a clear contrast on top
A shorter top or a light tuck can show where the trousers begin. That may be useful with a high waistband, but it is not mandatory. An untucked shirt can also work when its length and fabric feel right. If the outfit seems overwhelmed by material, change one element at a time: roll a sleeve, try a shorter jacket or choose a less bulky top.
For example, wide navy trousers with a white tee and flat leather sandals create a simple warm-weather combination. The same trousers can take a fine sweater and loafers when it is cooler. In both cases, the shoe remains easy to see without becoming the outfit's main event. You do not need a pointed toe or a particular body shape to make the proportions legitimate.
A longer open shirt can work over a simple fitted or close-cut top if you prefer coverage without a full tuck. The inner top keeps the waistband area less bulky while the shirt adds movement. Try the combination with the trousers already hemmed to the correct length so you are judging the outfit rather than compensating for fabric gathering at the floor.
For a dressier setting, the same pants may need only a smoother top and a different bag. Comfortable flats can remain if they suit the occasion. There is no reason to add a heel purely because the leg is wide; the finished length and the setting are more useful guides.
Check the day's movements
Sit in a chair, climb a step and imagine carrying a bag. Very wide hems can brush together or catch around obstacles, so choose a length and volume that suit the route. If the trousers are light-colored or thin, check opacity in daylight and use underlayers that feel comfortable rather than assuming the product photograph shows every detail.
Once one combination works, repeat its proportions with another top already in the closet. Wide-leg trousers become less daunting when treated as an ordinary pair of pants with a specific hem length, rather than as a trend requiring a completely different way of dressing.
